The increase in the size of the breast in a male may be due to hypertrophy of the gland, excess fat and skin or a combination of all.
It can have a constitutional-physiological (personal), tumoral or drug-related etiology, thus in the first consultation radiological and hormonal studies will be performed to rule out any serious pathology.
In the preoperative meeting, after having studied the cause and type of gynecomastia of the patient, Doctor Urcelay will explain in detail the different surgical options: liposuction (if the enhancement of the size is due to accumulation of fat) or glandulectomy (if it is due to hypertrophy of the gland).
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the type of surgery it might require hospital admission.
The scars are variable and depend on the degree of hypertrophy of the breast. In the case of only needing liposuction, the scars are minimal, and depending on the degree of hypertrophy and descent of the nipple can go from an incision around the areola to a vertical scar.
The patient should wear a compression shirt to simplify the readjustment of the skin for approximately 3 weeks.
It is not a painful intervention, although to avoid any kind of discomfort the patient must follow the medical instructions given by Dr. Urcelay.
The patient can go back to his social life after 3-4 days postintervention, he can also go back to work depending on the physical effort that the patient’s job requires. A month after the surgery the patient can undergo intense physical activity.
